Project Team Case Studies
Case Study* A Silicon Valley-based high-tech company realized significant cost savings when preparing for a large-scale environmental cleanup litigation case by using a team of contract paralegals and lawyers. Although the project would last three years, the firm's legal department did not want to hire additional personnel and contacted a staffing service, which initially provided a core group of three paralegals, who worked full-time for the duration of the project. As spikes occurred in phases of discovery, preparation for depositions, document production and responses to interrogatories, the service supplied up to seven additional paralegals and lawyers. Document automation was contracted out to an independent vendor. The company's outside counsel managed the efforts of the team and provided corporate counsel with daily progress updates. The project team approach was ideally suited to such a large, complex, document-intensive case, saving the firm an estimated $1 million in legal fees.
Case Study* A large legal publishing company had a number of law firms interested in retaining its services for website development. Rather than using existing staff, professional writers or web experts, the company assembled a team of project lawyers to produce content for the law firms' websites. At the beginning of the project, the lawyers visited each firm and interviewed its principals, gaining extensive knowledge of each one's practice. As the project progressed, the lawyers worked with legal writers to produce informational content for each site that was both interesting and accessible to potential clients, the media and the general public. The project lawyers were uniquely qualified to understand the scope and nature of each firm's practice, and to translate that knowledge into an online format that successfully advertised each firm's unique strengths and expertise to potential clients.
Case Study* A prominent law firm specializing in mergers and acquisitions landed a very large case requiring approximately 100 contract lawyers and 30 temporary paralegals. The firm engaged a legal staffing service to find the most experienced and skilled temporary professionals and assemble the team. One month into the case, deadlines were moved up and the workload increased. At the peak of the case, 250 lawyers, dozens of paralegals, a handful of temporary legal secretaries and approximately 40 data entry professionals worked around the clock. To motivate the team, the firm offered generous compensation for overtime, set daily goals for the number of boxes to review, held contests, distributed free movie passes and provided dinners for the team when milestones were reached. During long stretches on the afternoon shift, brownies and cookies kept the team's energy high. When the project drew to a close after four months, the team had interviewed thousands of the client's employees and reviewed 12,000 boxes of documents. The review process was completed on deadline and the client was satisfied. *Excerpted from The Project Team Approach © Robert Half Legal |
